Braces are the most popular, quickest, and most cost-effective orthodontic treatment available.  However, braces are very different from the past, they are smaller and much more comfortable.  In the past, separators had to be used to place bands around all of your back teeth, now a small brace can be bonded to the outside of the molars instead of metal bands around the teeth, dramatically increasing your comfort.

Not only has the technology in the braces changed, the technology in the wire has dramatically shifted over the years.  We now use high-technology, memory-shape wires that quickly move teeth with fewer adjustments.  These wires apply a continuous light gentle force instead of a short strong force, also leading to higher patient comfort.

What Braces are Made Of?

Braces are made of high quality stainless steel, titanium or cermanic. The three main parts of your braces are:

  • Brackets — Brackets are attached to the teeth using special adhesive that bonds them to the tooth surface and holds them in place.
  • Archwire —The archwire is the thin metal wire that connects each bracket and puts pressure on the teeth to help guide them into place.
  • Ligature Elastic (also known as the “rubber bands”) —Elastics, or rubber bands, are the colored ties that hold the archwires to the brackets. We will change the elastics at each appointment. Elastics may come in a variety of colors.  Adults and kids alike have a great deal of fun with this.  People will choose colors for holidays, school sport teams or our beloved Seahawks.

How Braces Work?

Once placed on your teeth, braces place constant light pressure on your teeth and the force of the pressure helps move teeth into proper position. At each appointment, we may tighten or change the archwires. In addition to braces, some patients may need to wear rubber bands. We will help you determine what treatment is best for your individual case.
